Chapter 372 The Government's Desperate Measures
John felt that the atmosphere was quite awkward after he had asked that question. As for Kevin, he already knew what was going on, but what could he do?
Actually, recently, Scarlet had agreed to start going out with him. But, he was not sure if the relationship was going to work, especially considering that Scarlet was not seemingly interested in the relationship that much.
But considering that he loved her sincerely, he decided to try keeping on pursuing her. He believed that he would be able to conquer her heart at some point in time.
A little while later, the dishes that they had ordered were brought over. They ate in silence, and finally, John spoke up after they had finished eating.
"I guess we will meet later on. Jaden and I will have to leave the city. We have something to deal with, so, I guess we may meet after we come back. As for how long that is going to take, I'm not really sure about it," he said.
As he was saying those words, he immediately got up, followed by Jaden. Then, the two of them left the restaurant, got inside Jaden's car, and the car drove away.
Inside the restaurant, both Jaden and Kevin watched as the car left. They were left with their own emotions, with Kevin thinking about his brother, while Scarlet thinking about her own emotions.
Inside the car, Jaden was driving towards the outskirts of the city. John had told him to drive out to the city, and that was what he was doing. As for where they were going to, he was not really sure.
He felt that there was something strange recently. By the use of the AI, he had not even managed to gain any information about the special unit making any moves. Additionally, the mercenaries have been extremely dormant during the past week.
This was something that had never been experienced at all. As for how Jaden knew about that, through the AI, he had gone through the past history of the entire Southern province.
In the Southern province, the activities of the mercenaries had never stopped. Even though it could not be compared to the activities of the mercenaries within the central province, but it had been extremely calm during the past week.
In simple terms, not even the small mercenary groups made any moves. The escort missions, the assassination missions, the retrieving missions and so on were not carried out by the mercenaries at all.
And as Jaden tried to find the reason as to why that was happening, he could not at all. But, he thought that possibly, it was related to the presence of mutants within the southern province.
The government had already sent mutants to the Southern province. With their presence here, it was clear that the mercenaries that were just ordinary people would be careful, not to provoke the mutants.
John did not try to explain anything either. Instead, he just silently sat on his seat, as if he was thinking about something. As for what it was that he was thinking about, only he himself knew.
Several minutes later, they managed to get out of the city. John had not clarified any direction that he had to use, and so, Jaden used the shortest way out of the city, which allowed them to get there in just about 40 minutes.
The moment that they got out of the city, John finally spoke up. "We are actually going to the central province. We have been recalled to go there, as we need to undergo some form of training. With the current situation, it is clear that the mutants are the future of our world.
Since we are members of the special unit, we will immediately lose the capability that we hold at the moment, if all the mercenaries suddenly became mutants. According to the information that I received recently, it seems that the research that the government has been doing is already about to succeed.
The moment that it does, it will be the time that the mutants will begin reigning supreme within this world. We will be part of the mutants, and we can continue with our role of maintaining peace within this country."
Jaden was surprised by the piece of information that was revealed by John. This was the very first time that John had ever informed him about something as secretive as this.
It was clear that even though Jaden was currently John's bodyguard, John always made sure to keep some secrets from him. But this time, he had revealed everything that was going to happen soon.
And of course, the thing that surprised Jaden the most was the fact that the government was already about to succeed. If the government really succeeded, it was clear that the military would be converted into mutants, and with that, the combat strength of the government would increase.
At that point, the government would finally be capable of repelling those world-class mercenary groups. But, was the government the only one that was doing the research?
Additionally, was it possible that the government did not have any mole within them? It was impossible, right? There had to be at least a single traitor or two within the government facilities that were in charge of the research at the moment.
And if the mercenaries managed to complete the research, and create mutants, then things would obviously get chaotic. The mercenaries did not like being restrained at all. But still, they would always enjoy the feeling of power.
What kind of joy would they get if they actually manage to subdue an entire country? What if they were actually the rulers of a nation? Such a thoughtful obviously drive someone crazy, as long as they were craving for power.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
Jaden did not speak at all. But he continued thinking about what John had said. And finally, he realized something. Maybe the reason why John had decided to reveal something like this was simply because Jaden himself was considered as a mutant.
Jaden did not really know about how mutants came to be. What was used in order to make them gain the abilities that they possessed? That was still a question that he did not know the answer to.
But nevertheless, he believed that he would be able to figure that out soon. After all, he would be going to the laboratory that was left behind by his parents. Jaden believed that the mutation that was happening, giving people abilities, was definitely related to the research that was being carried out by his parents.
"Okay. You are already a mutant, so you don't need this. But, what do you think about coming with me to the central province? I'm going to be part of the first batch of people that is going to undergo the mutation.
According to what we have been informed, there is a great risk, and there is a possibility that I might die in the end. According to our superiors, the chances of death are quite high, while the possibility of surviving this is as low as 1%.
I would like you to go with me to the central province, and if I end up not succeeding, I would like you to take my body back, and inform my family that I died while on a mission." John stated in a determined voice.
Jaden looked at John, while a small frown had already formed on his face. Just 1% success rate? Was that not something like death sentence to those that would be undergoing the mutation?
The more that he thought about it, the more that Jaden thought that he could not allow this to happen. Currently, he was John's bodyguard. And for that reason, he had to ensure John's safety.
Considering that 3 months had not yet ended, even if John wanted to kill himself, Jaden would obviously not allow that to happen. And now, for this mutation, Jaden did not have the plan of allowing John to go through it.

As selfish as it was, at least, he was trying to save a life. As for the government that was currently desperate to get mutants, he did not care about it at all. In any case, if things became more complicated, he could just find a way of locking away June for 3 months, before releasing him.
"Are you sure that there is no any other choice? 99% death probability is almost a guarantee for death." Jaden asked, despite knowing that there was none.
"Actually, I was recently informed that the mercenaries are about to succeed. This is something that has forced the government to become desperate, wanting to be the first ones to succeed.
After all, if we gain a large number of mutants, we can easily wipe out the mercenaries. But if the mercenaries gain the mutants first, then, we are the ones that are going to be wiped out instead.
Don't think of this as something that we were ordered to do. Our superiors know that the risk is great, and that is the reason why they gave us the choices. And, I decided to go through with this." John shook his head as he said those words.
From the way that he was speaking, Jaden could easily pick out the fact that John did not want to die. But, that was to be expected. Who would want to die? Even those that wanted to die, if they were told that they were going to die and uncertain death, they would feel fear, unless they had lost everything, including their spirit.
As for John, he was simply patriotic, the reason why he was willing to die for his country. But if Jaden was asked to do the same thing, he was not sure if he could go through with it.
"Okay then-" Jaden began speaking when he was suddenly interrupted.
Bang!
