Chapter 123
After Yu Yi made that request, System 037 fell silent. She understood that this was not an easy task for the system, so she did not press it.
At least there was still a glimmer of hope.
When she returned home, she was preoccupied with her thoughts, which her parents noticed. Her mother and father tried to cheer her up by cooking her favorite dishes every day. When her sister returned from a business trip, she took her out for a big meal, to the movies, and for a manicure.
Yu Yi had lived two lifetimes in another world before returning to the present. Seeing the bustling streets, towering skyscrapers, and the hustle and bustle of the city, she felt a bit out of place.
Yu Yan came out with the movie tickets and waved to her, saying, "The timing is perfect, let's go. Why do you look so unenthusiastic? Isn't this the movie you've been looking forward to?"
"Is it?" Yu Yi took the tickets and saw it was a big-budget sci-fi blockbuster, part of an international series. She had indeed been a fan of the series and had been counting down the days until this installment was released.
Now, holding the ticket, Yu Yi could no longer recapture the excitement she once felt.
Those two lifetimes in the other world had changed her in many ways.
After the movie, it was already dark outside. Neon lights illuminated the city, showcasing a different kind of prosperity compared to the other world. Yu Yi walked down the street with her sister, arm in arm, listening to the noise of traffic and people, lost in thought under the glow of the lights.
She had been spacing out a lot lately, often wondering what Xue Chenjing was doing. She had been back for five days, which meant it had been fifty days for him. In those fifty days, had he been sleeping well? Eating well? Probably crying a lot, she thought.
As she was lost in thought, she didn't notice a scooter coming her way. Yu Yan quickly pulled her back and tapped her on the head, worriedly saying, "Watch where you're going! Why are you so absent-minded these days? Are you thinking about a guy?"
Yu Yi snapped back to reality, covering her head and widening her eyes in surprise.
Yu Yan, seeing her reaction, exclaimed, "You really are thinking about a guy? Who is it? Do you have a crush? What's he like? Tall? Handsome? Do you have a photo? Is it that guy who was chasing you before?"
Yu Yi: "……"
Before she could respond, Yu Yan continued, "Oh right, I heard you mention a few days ago that this guy wanted to take you out. Did you agree?"
Yu Yi looked confused, trying to recall who she was talking about, but couldn't remember. "Which one?" she asked, bewildered.
Yu Yan rolled her eyes. "How would I know which one? Are there many? Do you really have a crush?"
Yu Yi paused, then nodded. "Yes, I do." Seeing her sister's nosy expression, she quickly added, "But it's not the one you're talking about. He's tall, handsome, and no, I don't have a photo."
Yu Yan became even more curious. "Are you two together? Is he a college classmate?"
"No."
"High school classmate?"
"No!"
"Surely not an elementary school classmate?"
Yu Yi sighed and joked, "Actually, he's from kindergarten."
Yu Yan paused, then realized she was being teased. "Oh, you're messing with me, huh?"
The two of them laughed and joked all the way home. When they heard that Yu Yi had trouble sleeping, Yu Yan brought a pillow and came to sleep with her. They lay side by side, chatting about random, trivial things.
When her sister put an arm around her shoulder and said, "We've always been together, but somehow, you've changed so much that you feel a bit unfamiliar to me," Yu Yi's heart trembled.
She turned to look at Yu Yan, silent for a moment, then softly called, "Sister, I want to tell you something."
Yu Yan nodded, looking like she was finally relieved that Yu Yi was ready to open up. "Go ahead, I'm listening."
Yu Yi organized her thoughts and slowly revealed the experiences she had in the other world. Yu Yan listened, wide-eyed, and finally exclaimed in disbelief, "Is this for real? It feels like I'm listening to a story! Is the guy you like Xue Chenjing?"
Yu Yi replied, "Yes, it's him."
Yu Yan flipped on the bedside lamp, pulled herself up, and said, "Alright, a cultivation world! Then show me some magic!"
Yu Yi looked helpless. "As soon as I return to this world, my powers are frozen, and I become an ordinary person again."
Yu Yan thought for a moment, then clapped her hands. "You know, if you wrote this as a novel and posted it online, it might go viral!"
Yu Yi: "……" She knew no one would believe her if she told them! She flopped back onto the bed, "Forget it, I'm going to sleep."
Yu Yan pulled her back up, annoyed. "Sleep later! You haven't even told me the ending!"
Yu Yi rolled her eyes. "I don't even know the ending myself!"
Yu Yan wouldn't give up. "Then bring out your system and show me!"
Yu Yi said, "You can't see it."
Yu Yan stared at her for a moment, then turned off the light and lay back down. Neither of them spoke for a long time. Just as Yu Yi was about to fall asleep, an arm wrapped around her waist and pulled her into a gentle embrace.
Yu Yan's soft whisper came from beside her ear: "Whether it's true or not, Yu Yi, I'm just glad you're back."
The next morning, Yu Yan was already gone when she woke up. Her sister had left early for work. After that, Yu Yan never mentioned that night again, probably treating Yu Yi's story as just that—a story.
Yu Yi was still on summer break, spending her days at home eating, sleeping, and waiting for the system's reply. The heat kept her from wanting to go out, so she focused on waiting for the system.
On the seventh day, System 037 finally came online again, saying, "Host, I have contacted System 073. We are under the same mission, and our system data can be linked. Once the mission data is merged, our hosts can communicate through the system."
Yu Yi pondered its words and asked, "Like making a phone call? Can I see him?"
"You can think of it that way," the system replied. "If you want to see him, we can create an independent space within the system for you to meet. However, creating a system space requires a large amount of points. You should carefully consider whether to proceed or not."
Yu Yi interrupted it, saying, "No need to consider. Create it. I want to see him."
The system replied, "Understood. Please wait a moment."
…
When System 073 received the message from the other system, it was quite surprised. It even wondered if it was because its host had been reforming and doing good deeds lately, finally moving the heavens to create this opportunity.
In any case, the request for data merging between System 073 and System 037 was approved by the main control system.
The two mission trees within the system, though originating from different tasks, intertwined as their data merged. The branches of the two trees intertwined like entwined lovers, gradually embracing each other.
System 073 got a close look at System 037 on the other mission tree. The two systems had followed different paths—one focused on upgrading, the other on emotional development. They each looked down on the other's mission tree, finding the tasks recorded on it laughable. They were truly incompatible and had little to talk about.
But for the sake of their hosts, the two systems had to swallow their pride and merge with each other.
Xue Chenjing, upon receiving the news from the system, finally pulled himself out of the "widowed" state of despair. From the moment he woke up, he started asking, "When can I see Yu Yi? Why isn't it ready yet? Why is it so slow? Are you even working?"
The system, pestered eight hundred times a day, finally couldn't take it anymore. "If you keep nagging, I'll unbind from you and leave this world!"
Xue Chenjing, furious, snapped a tree in half with a single palm strike. Grinding his teeth, he forced himself to calm down. "Fine, fine, I was wrong. I won't nag you anymore."n/ô/vel/b//jn dot c//om
The system, for the first time, enjoyed the feeling of its host pleading with it, feeling quite triumphant.
Xue Chenjing waited eagerly every day, from winter to spring. On the day the snow finally melted away, he received the long-awaited message from the system: "It's time."
He closed his eyes and lay down on the couch. His consciousness was pulled into a separate space by the system. This space was empty except for a peculiar-looking tree, its branches intertwined and adorned with blooming flowers that glowed softly, illuminating the entire area.
As Xue Chenjing walked under the tree, countless fragments of light showered down from its lush canopy. A figure gradually emerged from the shimmering light.
Before Yu Yi could even take in her surroundings, she was swept into a tight embrace by someone who rushed toward her. The familiar scent instantly filled her senses.
The arms wrapped around her were strong and firm, holding her so tightly it felt as though he wanted to press her into his very being.
Xue Chenjing buried his face in the crook of her neck, his warm breath brushing against her skin as he nuzzled her. "Ah Yi, Ah Yi, I missed you so much. I waited so long, and finally, I see you again," he murmured, his voice tinged with a barely concealed sob. Warm tears fell onto her neck, dampening the fabric of her dress.
In the real world, only fifteen days had passed, but in his world, it had been nearly half a year. Yu Yi gently stroked his back and whispered softly, "I'm sorry for making you wait so long."
Xue Chenjing loosened his grip slightly and wiped the tears from his lashes with his sleeve. His gaze swept over her features, inch by inch. "Is this what you really look like?"
Her facial features hadn't changed much—delicate brows, clear and bright eyes with deep double eyelids, long and thick lashes, a straight nose, and soft, full lips. However, her hair was shorter, dyed a light chestnut color with slightly curled ends, and she wore a fitted dress.
Yu Yi took his hand and pressed it against her cheek, smiling at him with curved eyes. "Well, do I look good?" She had put on makeup and dressed up carefully for this occasion.
His answer came in the form of a kiss, his lips pressing against hers, smudging the lipstick she had meticulously applied.
Xue Chenjing licked his lips. "It's sweet."
The flow of time in their two worlds was different. When the system created this space, it had to follow the rules of one of the worlds. Since Yu Yi's world was of a higher level, this space adhered to the laws of the real world.
Once Xue Chenjing stepped into this space, he would also follow its rules. He would accompany her through the passage of time in the real world, growing old together, and eventually welcome her back to his own world.
The two sat under the tree, and Yu Yi used System 073 to show him her home in the real world. Her parents were lounging on the couch watching TV, while her sister, Yu Yan, lay on the window seat's beanbag chair, engrossed in a novel on her phone.
Yu's Mother glanced toward her daughter's room and whispered to Yu Yan, "Have you figured out why your sister has been so down lately?"
Without looking up, Yu Yan replied, "People in love are like that—always worrying and overthinking."
Yu's Father, who had been absorbed in the TV drama, suddenly sat up straight, shocked. "She's in love? How old is she to be dating already? No, I have to—"
Before he could finish, Yu's Mother slapped his arm. "Stop shouting! Your daughter is in college. If she doesn't date now, when should she?" She then turned back and continued, "So, where is this boy from? Is he her classmate? Ah Yi should bring him home so we can meet him."
Yu Yan sighed. "Mom, it's not even official yet. There's no need to rush to meet the future son-in-law. Ah Yi is very popular; lots of people are chasing her. Who knows if this guy will even be the one?"
Yu's Mother pondered for a moment and nodded. "You're right."
After that, the elderly couple turned their attention to Yu Yan, urging her to find a boyfriend soon.
Xue Chenjing turned his gaze to Yu Yi, his eyes burning with intensity. He pouted, his face clearly expressing, "If it's not me, then who else could it be?"
Yu Yi gently caressed his cheek to reassure him. "It's you, it's you, it can only be you. I'll definitely find a way to bring you back to my world so my parents can meet you."
The two systems perched on the tree silently exchanged glances: "…"
They didn’t need to say their plans out loud.
