Dragon King's Harem Chapter 311. A Letter From The Lizard King I
For a moment, everything felt still. The kind of stillness that usually happens right before a serious conversation or when something bad’s about to go down. But then, out of nowhere, I found myself chuckling. It was ridiculous, but I couldn't stop it. It wasn’t the time for laughter, especially not with the royal soldiers and a bunch of officials around, but the more I tried to hold it in, the harder it became.
I tried to stifle it, but that little chuckle turned into full-blown laughter, and before I knew it, Evelina and Jyne were laughing too, covering their mouths to keep it quiet. Even Eir, who’s always so composed, cracked a smile, though he quickly hid it. It was just one of those moments, I guess.
Al, standing there, clearly irritated, shot us a look that could’ve burned a hole through the floor. "Right..." he muttered, his voice dripping with sarcasm. I could almost hear the thought running through his mind. ‘You must have done something to them, didn’t you?'
But he quickly recovered, pushing his frustration aside, probably to avoid making things worse. "Tell me what happened, Your Majesty," Al said, the formality back in his voice as he tried to steer the conversation back on track.
I wiped my eyes and cleared my throat, trying to reign in the laughter. “I’ll explain it in my office. This is definitely not the kind of thing we should be talking about here,” I said, waving a hand to signal it was time to get back to the serious stuff.
Al didn’t look entirely convinced. "What about that commoner he mentioned?" he pressed, his exhaustion still evident. I could see the frustration building up. It had been one of those days, and the last thing he needed was more unnecessary drama.
"I’ll explain all that in the office too," I promised, giving him a reassuring nod. There was no point in adding more fuel to the fire here. The last thing we needed was panic spreading through the hall, especially when we weren’t sure what the full situation was yet.
With that, we all headed to my office. The corridor felt unusually quiet, almost too quiet, as if something was about to happen. Al, Eir, and I walked in silence. It was clear that they were all mentally preparing for whatever conversation awaited us behind that office door.
When we finally made it inside, I made a beeline for my desk. But my eyes immediately went to the pile of papers stacked up on the desk—seemingly out of nowhere. It was like the paperwork had somehow multiplied in my absence. I stared at the mountain of documents for a second, just wondering why it was always so much when I came back. It felt like a joke, like the paperwork had a mind of its own and just bred while I was gone.
I sighed and pushed the papers to the side. “Where’s the letter?” I asked, directing my attention back to Al, who had been holding onto the damn thing.n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om
Al reached into his coat and handed it over, a slight apology in his voice. "Sorry, I opened it before you got back," he explained. "The messenger seemed pretty frantic, and I thought something might have gone wrong." He seemed genuinely sorry, though it wasn’t like he had much of a choice. In urgent situations, royal officials were allowed to open letters addressed to the king.
“It’s fine, Al,” I reassured him, waving away his apology. “You know how the lizards are. Always acting like dragons, but they’re just lizards at the end of the day,” I said with a slight sneer, not bothering to hide the disdain in my voice. There had always been tension between the lizard and dragon tribes. It wasn’t exactly a peaceful relationship, and my frustration with their constant antics wasn’t exactly a secret.
I unfolded the letter, and the room seemed to hold its breath. I read through it, my mind racing as the contents sank in.
After a moment, I put the letter back on the desk and tried to break the tension. “As I thought, this is about that trip I took last time,” I said casually, trying to downplay it. “There’s nothing to worry about, really.”
Al, clearly still confused, frowned. “Uh... which trip? You barely spent any time in the palace after you woke up from hibernation,” he said, his voice tinged with confusion. It was clear he didn’t quite follow.
