Chapter 287: Dead End

Chapter 287: Dead End

“San Geng gong rings. Boat rides on the moon. The half-filled crop can cure the feeling of sadness.”

Fatty’s eyes were big and small as he read the words on the paper. He pursed his lips and turned to Xia Meng and the Doctor, “This appears to be some kind of code.” He loved to read wuxia novels. They usually used pigeons to send letters. To prevent the information from being stolen by the enemies, they communicated in codes.

Perhaps she was frightened by the Doctor. Xia Meng was cooperative. She honestly handed over the newspaper. She sat at the table with a dark face. It was hard to tell what she was thinking.

San Geng was easy to understand. It should be talking about midnight. With the gong ringing, it probably meant that Young Master Huang would come to the lake again. But, boat rides on the moon?

Fatty blinked. He believed this was an analogy. After all, how could a boat ride on the moon?

“It’s the reflection.” Jiang Cheng said without lifting his head from the newspaper, “The moon forms a reflection on the lake’s surface. When the boat moves across it, it’ll look like the boat is riding over the moon.”

Xia Meng’s expression didn’t change as she had already guessed that. Her focus was on the last two sentences. The half-filled crop can cure the feeling of sadness.

The last sentence could be understood as the way to solve their current predicament. The thing that confused her was the sentence before that. What was a crop? And why was it half-filled? It was fine if the crop was a real thing but if it were a metaphor like the boat riding over the moon, it would be so hard to guess.

“There will be drums at midnight. The boat will slide over the moon’s reflection on the water. If we find the half-filled crop, it can resolve the issue that troubles us the most.” Fatty used his own words to translate the code. Fatty scratched his head heavily. He appeared anxious. After all, the Doctor was the one being targeted. “What kind of clue is this?” He sat down beside the Doctor and grumbled, “It is useless!”

“Not really,” It was Jiang Cheng who spoke. He was calmer than the other two even though he was the one being targeted, “At least we know Young Master Huang will do another show tonight, and there will be a boat.”

“We can also confirm when the ghost will make its move,” Xia Meng said chillingly, “It’s when the boat is over the reflection of the moon.”

“But whose boat?” Jiang Cheng asked.

“It might carry Young Master Huang or maybe a few of us.” Xia Meng said, “It’s fine if we can take the boat at the same time, but if we have to ride the boat one by one…” She paused, “Someone should start praying.”n/ô/vel/b//in dot c//om

Fatty looked at Jiang Cheng and Xia Meng. He was surprised that the elusive code could lead to so many things. However, he understood one thing: the ghost would attack the Doctor when the boat was over the reflection of the moon.

“Doctor,” Fatty suddenly became excited, “Then, we can just make sure the boat doesn’t cross the moon’s reflection! Or… maybe we can not get on the boat tonight.” In his mind, as long as he could stop the prediction from happening, then the ghost couldn’t make a move, and the Doctor would be safe.

Xia Meng looked at Fatty and then glanced at Jiang Cheng as if asking, are you serious about bringing this dude with you?

However, to Xia Meng’s surprise, Jiang Cheng didn’t show any impatience towards Fatty. He only spoke faster. “It’s not the bowl of blood. That was the hint.”

“Hint?” Fatty was confused. He believed that the Doctor was targeted because he chose the bowl with human blood. “What kind?” Fatty gasped, “Was that a hint that you are being targeted?”

“Yes.” Fatty quickly went through the events that had happened in his mind. He believed the Doctor had a point. This felt like a hint… from the ghost. No! Fatty’s pupils shook. This was more like the rules. After all, the mission wouldn’t put someone in a dead-end.

“Then, Doctor, when were you targeted?” Fatty asked.

“It’s because he didn’t read Young Master Huang’s pulse.” Xia Meng’s voice began, “Do you remember what the middle-aged woman said when we were going to Young Master Huang’s place?

“We were given two tasks. One was to put on the costume, and two was to examine Young Master Huang’s illness.” Xia Meng sounded very confident.

Fatty swallowed as something crossed his mind. Tang Shirou, who died, was the only one who didn’t wear the costume. Therefore, she was skinned. And the Doctor… was the only one who didn’t see Young Master Huang, much less examine his illness. Even Qin Jian, who was after him, saw Young Master Huang.

This… made sense.

“But…” Fatty still wanted to argue, as if that was the only way for the Doctor to have a chance at survival.

Before he could continue, Xia Meng cut him off, “If he didn’t run down the stairs so soon, I believe he’d encounter Young Master Huang. What a shame…” This sentence touched Fatty’s nerve. The way he looked at Xia Meng turned from shock to anger.

“You already knew!” Fatty jumped up. He pointed at Xia Meng and scolded, “Then, why didn’t you say anything earlier? You bitch!” Fatty was imposing. Even by just standing there, he blocked out the light before Xia Meng.

Xia Meng only then realised this normally weak Fatty, who was a pushover, was not just fat. He was extremely muscular. With his red eyes and popping veins, he looked like he’d eat her.

Her lips opened, but she forgot what to say.

“Fatty,” Jiang Cheng uttered. Fatty calmed down instantly when he heard the Doctor’s voice. He didn’t sit back down. He wanted to hear what the Doctor had to say before he decided to let Xia Meng go or not.

“It has nothing to do with her,” Jiang Cheng offered.
