Chapter 162 - 161: Meeting
When Morringan woke up the next morning, her servants quickly prepared her, dressed her, fixed her hair, and gave her an attractive look.
When the sun reached its peak and illuminated the entire land, Morringan went down to the dining table. After a quick break for lunch, she swiftly returned to her office to continue working.
This was just a regular day for Morringan. Like a routine, she always did the same things: wake up, eat, work, sleep...
This routine was very unhealthy. Lucifer, seeing that Morringan never took time for herself, watched with discomfort. Always a man who put his own pleasure before his work, following a routine like Morringan’s was not his style.
"Morringan, maybe you’d like to do something different today?" Lucifer gently touched Morringan’s cheek with his crow wings and spoke calmly, tilting his head. Morringan responded without looking up from the table. "I’m not available right now. Maybe another time?"
"Which time? Don’t you do the same thing every day?" Lucifer smiled. Morringan furrowed her brows and seriously looked at the papers in front of her. "Work should never be delayed."
Lucifer’s gaze shifted to the document Morringan was studying, and as soon as his eyes saw it, he almost fainted. Lucifer’s playful gaze returned to Morringan. "I’m sure a big amusement park can wait."
Morringan paused for a moment and then thought about Lucifer’s persistent words. Perhaps it was time for a break. At least resting for her health would be a good idea.
"Alright, I’ll rest today," Morringan said with a small smile. Lucifer relaxed and smiled. "Good, for a moment I thought you’d reject me."
Morringan quickly headed to the garden, and saw the crow jump off Lucifer’s shoulder, returning to his human form.
Lucifer’s appearance had changed. His long hair was tied in a low ponytail, carelessly. He wore a red tie, a clean suit, and black trousers.
Now, he truly looked like a King, more than before. A noble outfit, a handsome appearance...
Morringan had to admit that her God was truly handsome. He didn’t have an absurd muscle mass. His proportionate muscles and an aristocratic aura that would appeal to any woman.
"It would be nice to have some tea first," Lucifer said with a gentle smile. At Morringan’s command, the table was set, and the tea was brought. Since it was Sunday, most of the servants were few in number.
Therefore, the garden was quiet, and it was the perfect setting for a date. Even if Lucifer and Morringan didn’t see it this way, the atmosphere was like a date. Morringan blushed.
After sipping tea for a while, she didn’t know what to say. Still, Lucifer started the conversation. "Have you gotten used to being Empress?"
Morringan looked up, paused for a moment, then answered. "At first, I was a bit hesitant. I mean, there was fear of failure or inexperience."
Morringan said hesitantly. "But the ministers and Thomas helped me a lot. I got used to it quickly. All I had to do was review and approve things. The rest was handled by capable people."
"I see, still, you did a good job, Morringan," Lucifer said with a gentle smile. "Do you know what people say about you?"
"A tyrant?" Morringan asked uncertainly. Lucifer shook his head and rejected the idea. Then he looked at Morringan seriously. "No, quite the opposite. They see you as a Hero, a savior. The one who drove out the Holy Mary Kingdom and the Light Goddess, who elevated the Empire and offered people a new and better future..."
"But I’ve destroyed many people, many families. How can they still call me a hero after all this?" Morringan asked with a strange expression. Honestly, Morringan found it wrong to be praised as a Hero and savior by people.
She had censored Drachenreich, taken anyone who was anti-Empire or socialist to concentration camps, and forcibly displaced many families. Honestly, Morringan didn’t see herself as a Hero, but as a Tyrant.
"What do you think a tyrant is?" Lucifer asked curiously. Morringan answered, "A person who uses the people for their own gain, a genocidal, ruthless, and corrupt individual."
"Have you ever destroyed a family for your own gain? Have you ever given an order not for the Empire’s interests, but for your own?" Lucifer asked seriously, and Morringan fell silent, not speaking.
Seeing that Morringan was silent, Lucifer furrowed his brows. "You’re not a tyrant. When it comes to the Empire’s interests, there is no such thing as good or evil, Morringan. The only real thing is success and progress. The rest is insignificant."
Lucifer was serious. He clearly didn’t care about the wrongdoings they committed. Was he manipulating people like the Light Goddess? Or forcing people like a Devil?
Yes, Lucifer saw himself like the Light Goddess. Both had done evil for their own gain. But there was a difference between them. The difference was hypocrisy.
Neither Morringan nor Lucifer considered themselves to be good beings. They openly acknowledged their mistakes and crimes and knew the consequences.
The Light Goddess and others were hypocritical. What makes a person truly evil? Is it the massacres they commit? Or are people considered evil by society only if they do wrong or bad things?
For Lucifer, if a person wasn’t hypocritical, then they weren’t evil. Because in reality, they were doing evil for their own gain and their own people. He would only consider an enemy evil who did evil for their own people.
On the other hand, his people would always see Lucifer or Morringan as heroes.
The Light Goddess, however, did evil, and wouldn’t hesitate to kill her own people for her own gain. She didn’t hesitate to make them puppets, or to kill their families.
If both sides do evil to protect their own interests and people, does that make both sides truly evil? The simple answer is no.
Good and evil are always nonsense. There are no good or evil people. There are only interests and gains. Morringan’s role here was entirely driven by interests.
It was completely natural for Morringan to be tough to protect her interests and people. From Lucifer’s or an ordinary person’s point of view, there was nothing wrong with that.
"It is natural for you to do bad deeds. Tell me, would you abandon 100 Aurelions to save just one of your citizens?"
"Yes, I would," Morringan said resolutely. Lucifer then grinned. "Yes, I would too. But does that make us bad people?"
This time, Morringan fell silent. Lucifer looked at her with an even wider grin. "No, it doesn’t make us bad, because we saved our citizen."
Seeing the slight confusion in Morringan’s expression, Lucifer quickly continued. "There are no inherently good or bad people. There are only good actions and bad actions. It is natural to do evil to protect one’s interests, but if you have the opportunity and your interests are not harmed, then saving both your citizen and 100 Aurelions is a good deed."
Morringan’s eyes widened with understanding. "So, doing evil for the sake of interests doesn’t make us bad."
"Exactly," Lucifer replied. "But remember, if your interests are not harmed, then doing good won’t hurt. You do good, but if the good you do goes against the interests of your people, then doing evil won’t be a bad act."
Morringan paused for a moment, thoughtfully took a sip of her tea. She reflected on all her actions up until now and concluded that Lucifer was right.
Up until now, they had eliminated anyone within their own people who tried to harm their status. If Morringan had called these actions for a greater good, then she would indeed be bad and hypocritical.
On the contrary, Morringan understood that what she had done was to protect her interests. The socialists who were arrested had the same goal: to protect their own interests and ideologies, just like Morringan and Lucifer.
Naturally, Morringan, with greater interests, had eliminated the socialists who posed a threat to her country’s interests. What was wrong with that? Was it bad that she arrested them?
No, there was nothing wrong here. Morringan had preserved the shaky foundation of the New Empire and had eliminated threats for her own interests.
"I’m glad you understand," Lucifer grinned and took a sip of his tea. Unlike Morringan, he had quite a wild way of drinking. After taking a sip, he looked at Morringan with satisfaction.
He was pleased that Morringan had understood him so quickly. "Good, now let’s not talk about these things and have a conversation, like friends."
"Yes, like friends." Morringan smiled and closed her eyes to enjoy the peace. Indeed, as Lucifer had said, resting a bit felt good.
"I met Urien’s father the other day," Lucifer said calmly. Morringan was surprised for a moment. "Does Urien have any surviving family members?"
Lucifer shook his head and looked down with some disappointment. "Yes, sadly. His sister died right before my eyes. His father, on the other hand, turned into a monster due to a werewolf curse."
"Hmm, that’s truly sad for Urien," Morringan said. "Did you tell Urien about this?" n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
"Not yet. Maybe after the war ends," Lucifer replied. "I have an agreement with Talon. He’s hunting a Satanic Cult for me. I’m expecting results soon."
"Talon? That name sounds familiar." Morringan, thinking over Lucifer’s words, recalled an intelligence report she had received from Thomas.
"He’s a legendary mercenary," Lucifer said, curious about what Morringan was thinking. Morringan narrowed her eyes. She remembered the report for a moment.
"Thomas told me Talon was hunting something... something like a Noble Party member." Morringan said hesitantly. Lucifer gave her a curious look. Your journey continues on empire
Even Lucifer didn’t know what Talon was after. While playing Otome games, players didn’t know much about some of the deeper topics, as they had only managed Alice’s storyline.
"I’ll tell Thomas to investigate this." Morringan said calmly. Lucifer didn’t say anything more. They continued to chat for a while.
As they talked about everyday matters, time passed quickly. After 1 or 2 hours, Lucifer, not wanting to steal more of Morringan’s time, gently stood up from the table.
"My lady, I should thank you for dedicating your day to me." Like a gentleman, Lucifer complimented Morringan gently. "You’ve made my day better."
Morringan smiled, took Lucifer’s hand, and lightly stood up from the table. "I should be the one thanking you. You gave me a lovely conversation."
Lucifer, grinning with amusement, didn’t say anything else and then gently disappeared into the shadows, leaving.
Once Morringan was alone again, she didn’t wait any longer and left to attend to her duties.
What do you think?
